Building Effective Partnerships to Combat Extreme Poverty and Exclusion

On October 17th, 2008, as a part of its recognition of the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty, ATD Fourth World organized a round table dialogue at the United Nations in New York in partnership with the NGO Sub-committee for the Eradication of Poverty, the UN Department of Economic and Social Affairs and the Mission of France to the United Nations. The round table was entitled “Turning Rhetoric into Action: Building Effective Partnerships to Combat Extreme Poverty and Exclusion”

The dialogue included people experiencing poverty from the ‘north’ and ‘south’ as specialists on participation and reaching the poorest in their communities. Also on the round table were government representatives, representatives from civil society, UN officials and human rights specialists. The round table discussion was a rare occasion that brought together diverse actors to discuss building meaningful partnerships for poverty eradication and the implications for policy development and social action.

An interim toolkit was written as a background document for the round table and highlighted case studies from around the world, laying out a guide for realizing true, meaningful and lasting partnerships with people experiencing poverty. ATD Fourth World is currently gathering feedback and continues to develop a final version of the toolkit which will also take into account the round table dialogue findings.

Wherever men and women are condemned to live in extreme poverty, human rights are violated.
To come together to ensure that these rights be respected is our solemn duty.
