The International Leadership Team of ATD Fourth World seeks to share its analysis, its point of view on what is going on in the world. With thinking coloured by sharing the experience of daily life with the poorest families they invite us to share a new way of looking at things, to find another way of living, of being together… to unite for a world without the misery of poverty.

The power of Africa

"The Power of Africa - Africa as a Stronger Actor on the international Stage" is a conference organised by the International Symposium on Cultural Diplomacy in May 2012. It focused on the possibilities and barriers that the African countries are facing in terms of economic and political bargaining power as well as the prospect of speaking with one voice on the international stage.
Eugen Brand, Director-General of ATD Fourth World, together with several ambassadors of African countries to France, was a speaker at the conference. Below is his contribution.

In a short video clip, Eugen Brand, Director general, makes three suggestions to the international community :

  • To ask the Nobel Peace Pize Committee to examine ways in which to honour the courage of those who seek to build peace while living in conditions of extreme poverty;
  • To include in national constitutions the text of the Stone on the Human Rights Plaza in Paris, France: "Wherever men and women are condemned to live in extreme poverty, human rights are violated. To come together to ensure that these rights be respected is our solemn duty."
  • To determine some "Guiding principles for a culture of peace" rooted in overcoming extreme poverty.
